2020 NRL Season Debuts in Mere Hours

With only a matter of hours remaining until our deliverance from NRL purgatory, as best we can determine, the NRL is going ahead with the Telstra 2020 NRL Premiership competition.

Last season, we did quite well guessing the winners of each round, although admittedly, we waited until the fourth round before we started guessing. We wanted to give the clubs time to iron out the kinks.

No such restraint this year.

Here are our guesses for Round 1 of the 2020 NRL season, along with our disclaimer that absolutely no one should consider our guesses as betting advice.

We stake a hypothetical $100 per match, and then report the following week with our results. This year, we will be including a five percent margin for the bookies, in order to more closely resemble punting reality. We guess only the head-to-head outcomes, as line betting is far too sophisticated for the likes of us.

The first game is Parramatta Eels versus Canterbury Bulldogs. The quote we saw for the Eels was $1.30. We will back them for a potential gross dividend of $130.

Canberra Raiders are hosting Gold Coast Titans. Thanks for that one NRL. Give us Canberra for another potential $130.

Rugby league action in Townsville between the Latrell Mitchell driven Cowboys versus the Brisbane Broncos have us looking for an upset and a healthy $225 return.

Newcastle Knights are hosting the New Zealand Warriors. Will the real rugby club please stand up? We like the Knights for a possible $142.

South Sydney Rabbitohs for $157 seems like the safe play over the Cronulla Sharks.

The 2019 NRL premiers Sydney Roosters will be playing Penrith Panthers at Penrith Stadium. We were pleased to see one of the online bookies quoting Sydney at $1.45, so we take the Chooks and hope to earn $145.

Manly are hosting Melbourne Storm. We are making this out second upset pick of the week in a quest for $215.

The final fixture of Round 1 in the 2020 NRL Premiership season is St. George versus Wests Tigers at WIN Stadium. We flipped a coin and it came up Dragons. We recently watched the concluding season of Game of Thrones, so Dragons it is for $180.

See you next week for the results.
