Ablett Willing to Take Big Chop in Salary to Return to Geelong

In a financial move that calls to mind the prescience of New England Patriot quarterback Tom Brady, who restructured his contact with the team so that his four-game suspension for ball tampering in 2015 wound up costing what to him was pocket change, we have learned that Gary Ablett’s deal with the AFL’s Gold Coast Suns will reduce his income for 2018 in a way that would reduce the impact of his desired move back to the Geelong Cats.

Ablett is being paid over $1 million this year, but that drops to $700,000 in 2018, meaning that he will not have to have his wallet pilfered by the Cats, with Ablett giving up less than half of his 2018 salary, rather than $600,000.

Our advice to you, Gary, is do not do it. Nothing against Geelong, and no advocacy for Gold Coast, but your clock is winding down and in a business where the motto is loyalty-schmoyalty, the extra money might come in handy when you hit the ripe old age of 34 and AFL teams will be inclined to think that a young up-and-comer willing to work for less than one third of what you cost is the far better bargain.
