August is upon us and the month offers some of the best punting of the year.

It is hard to decide where to start, but near and dear to our hearts, important Group Thoroughbred racing returns in August as the preparations for the big autumn carnivals hit full stride.

Winx will no longer be racing, but her namesake race, the Winx Stakes (formerly the Warwick Stakes) kicks off the Group one racing toward the end of the month.

The AFL is in the final month of home-and-away play and recent indications are that Geelong is not the uncatchable club they appeared to be only recently. West Coast is showing signs that it will not surrender the flag easily, but the true surprise of the Toyota 2019 AFL Premiership competition is without doubt the Brisbane Lions. The club looks to finish top four and cannot be taken lightly for finals.

The final four games and the finals often find the bookies offering free bets promotions and other incentives, so the opportunity to play with house money is sure to be in evidence.

Similarly, The Telstra 2019 NRL Premiership competition is supplying plenty of drama and surprises as the clubs in contention are flexing and preparing for a finals season that is certain to be dramatic, if the action through the first 19 rounds supplies any insight.

Week-in, week-out, the NRL stages contests that are down to the wire and even the lowly Titans have managed to catch four of the other clubs off guard.

It appears as though Melbourne is uncatchable, but they showed that they are mortal in a recent nail-biter loss to Manly.

The big news for August is the Ashes. Australia won last year and is looking to retain the urn. The bookies favour England for reasons we cannot fathom, but perhaps the way England dominated all comers in the recently concluded ICC ODI World Cup is behind the favourtism the bookies are showing toward the Poms. The way they erased New Zealand in the final proves that they are so good, they can win a tied match would have us telling everyone to look for every and all free betting market they can find.

The first Test has the two squads almost even, but Test cricket and ODI are two different animals, at least in the eyes of the experts.

Professional American gridiron will debut in August. The pre-season is a time for experimentation mainly, but expect to see the up-and-comers going to every length to gain a spot on one of the 32 clubs’ roster or practice squad. Valentine Holmes is trying to succeed where Jarryd Hayne failed. He is on the bubble as the sixth running back on the depth chart of the New York Jets, but his athletic skills have the Jets’ coaches looking for some way to capitalise on Holmes’ talent.

Major college football will kick into gear. It is roughly equivalent to trying to pick the winner from a 16-horse field of two-year-olds, but there are more than a few who prefer the college game.

We typically include some comments on motor racing, but F1 is mainly irrelevant this season and Supercars offers little of interest. Both codes are victims of the vast superiority of one team versus the others and even if offered, we would not suggest squandering any free bookmaker bets on motor racing.

The shortened PGA season is proving a hit with fans and players and the season-long FedEx Cup Playoffs will begin in August. It might be a good opportunity for Jason Day to salvage his season. Adam Scott could use a boost as well. Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith showed nicely at the St. Jude Classic and all four are showing that their games are in reasonable shape as Melbourne sets to host the Presidents Cup later in the year.

Major League Baseball continues it war of attrition and might benefit from taking a page from the book of professional golf and compress the season, but they would have to eliminate some regular season games, compress the pre-season training and cease letting so many teams into the playoffs, but even the most optimistic supporter of that notion knows it will never happen.

So then, August might be an ideal month to join Sportsbet for a $501 dollar bonus free bet, but in any event, make sure to use the bookmakers’ free bets, bookmakers free bookie bonuses and promotions to get that extra edge to keep you in front.
