There is good news and bad news out of Rio.
To get the bad news out of the way, the Australian women’s field hockey team lost to the U.S. women’s team by the score of 2 – 1. The U.S. women had goals from Michelle Vittese and Caitlin Van Sickle, with the win moving them into first place in Pool B.
On the good news front, the Australian women took the first Olympic gold medal ever awarded for rugby sevens and the gold was even sweeter for coming from a 24 – 17 victory over the New Zealand women. The bronze medal went to Canada.
At this early juncture of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Australia has four golds and four bronze medals, but has yet to earn a silver. Japan and Italy have more total medals, but only three golds each.
Of the four gold for Australia, one is for rugby, another is for trap shooting and two are for swimming.
The Aussie men’s sevens team had a rude awakening in a loss to France, due to generally sloppy play that found them down 17 – 0 at the half. They mounted a comeback and closed the gap to 17 – 14 before defensive lapses handed the French two more tries late in the game to post a final score of 31 – 14.
