The Tour Championship, the final event of the 2015 – 2016 USPGA season, gets underway today at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, with two Australians, Jason Day and Adam Scott, well positioned to take the FedEx Cup and the accompanying $10 million US bonus.
Day and Scott will be paired for the first round and are among five golfers who can win the FedEx Cup with a victory at the Tour Championship. The other 25 players in the all-star field of 30 have mathematical chances of winning the Cup, but it will depend on a series of circumstances regarding the finishing order of others.
Scott is third in the standings going into the tournament and Day is fourth. Scott has won on the East Lake course before, in 2006, the year prior to the launch of the FedEx Cup series. He personally hopes to atone for what, in his eyes at least, was a frustrating season, despite winning twice in the early stages of the season.
Day has the issue of a back injury hovering over him, but he has rebounded from the issue before, and has had two weeks to rest and rehabilitate the muscles.
Day and Scott will face formidable competition from Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Paul Casey, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIllroy.
