The 2017 AFL season will mark the return of Geoff Walsh to the Collingwood Magpies, although he will start his duties as the side’s GM of Football in preparation for the season well before the first bounce in March.
Walsh has left his job with the ‘Roos to take up the positon he held with the Pies from 2006 to 2013. He worked for North Melbourne for three seasons.
The position with the Pies came open when Graeme Allan abandoned the post following a 2016 campaign that found the Magpies well down the ladder in 12th, winners of only nine games and four spots outside the finals.
The Magpies are set to move into their 125th season since their founding in 1892. They last won a premiership in 2010 during Walsh’s tenure, so it is hoped that he can return the club to those winning ways and at the very least, get the side into the top eight on a consistent basis.
Walsh is well traveled in the AFL, a desirable characteristic for the position he will fill for Collingwood. In addition to his situations with the Pies and the ‘Roos, he has worked for the Carlton Blues and Fitzroy Lions.
