Today’s code hopping subject in a basketball player who played college ball for four years in the U.S. for Bryant University in Rhode Island before returning to play in the NBL for the Cairns Taipans and the Townsville Crocs.
He is Corey Maynard and he has signed on with the Dees, who were able to sign Maynard because he has not played Aussie Rules for three years. As you might expect of a former basketballer, Maynard is tall, 191 cm to be exact, and footy was his number one sport as a lad growing up. His deal with the Demons is for one year as a Category B rookie, so it might potentially be a little while before the 24-year-old gets on the ground, but then again, given Melbourne’s fortunes of late, he could be on sooner rather than later.
His younger brother Brayden is a member of the Collingwood Football Club, who in his second year has seen considerable playing time, appearing in 18 games with two remaining for the Pies.
The brothers’ sire, Peter, played eight games for the Dees in the span of three seasons, but if ability skips a generation, as some say, it is Grandfather Graham Campbell, a member of the Fitzroy Hall of Fame and winner of their best and fairest award in 1957, who might provide the pattern for expectations of the Maynard brothers.
