Nick Kyrgios served up some cold revenge when he upset world number two Andy Murray in straight sets in Hopman Cup play. The win was payback for Murray’s having eliminated Kyrgios from three out of four Grand Slam events in 2015.
Kyrgios currently occupies the number 30 ranking, so the victory should give him some nice momentum going into the upcoming Australian Open.
He credits an anonymous tipster for giving him the advice he used to beat Murray, and while he would not divulge the tipster’s name, he did reveal that it was a person of the female persuasion. Kyrgios has also been under the wing of Lleyton Hewitt for the past several months.
Kyrgios used a powerful service game to defeat Murray by the score of 6 – 4, 7 – 6 (7 – 5). He also played a role in the mixed doubles, contributing to a win that has Australia Green nicely positioned for a spot in the mixed doubles final on Saturday, provided that they beat France on Friday.
The win against Murray found Kyrgios playing some of the best tennis of his career. Now, it just remains to be seen whether he can maintain that level of play when he moves on to the season’s first Grand Slam.
