Lest we be accused of giving short shrift to futbol supporters and practitioners of pretend (fantasy) sports, here is an olive branch extended to soccer fans everywhere. The other crowd will have to wait.
The Newcastle Jets went on a scoring binge of epic proportions and played as though they were facing an empty net against the Brisbane Roar at McDonald Jones stadium (until recently Hunter Stadium), totally embarrassing the three-time A- League champs.
The match was 1 – 0 in favour of the Jets at halftime thanks to a goal from Jack Hingert. The Roar nearly added the equalizer on a chance by Tommy Oar, but the finger of Jets keeper Jack Duncan redirected the ball onto the bar.
The game remained close up until midway through the second half, when a Nigel Boogaard header doubling the Jets’s advantage. A third goal from Steven Ugarkovic ensured the total rout of the Roar and Devante Clut was permitted to celebrate his birthday in style with a goal courtesy of Nabbout’s solving of a Roar offside trap.
Okay, fantasy fans, your turn. Go ahead and imagine that all this happened. Do not let the reality of the Roar’s dismemberment at the feet of the Jets spoil your fun.
