Adelaide is hosting the Women’s Australian Open February 19 -21 and the LPGA is wasting no time promoting the event. They recently announced that New Zealand’s teen sensation, Kydia Ko would be in the field to defend the crown she won last year at Royal Melbourne.
The tournament is being held at The Grange and former world number one and five-time national champion Karrie Webb has committed to play. Another player sure to attract interest is Australian newcomer Minjee Lee.
Ko said she is looking forward to returning to play in Australia as she credits playing here with providing several significant moments in her career to this point. Ko won the major 2015 Evian Championship in putting the exclamation point to her capture of the CME Globe as the top player on the USLPGA Tour.
Webb said she is using the Open to get things rolling in 2016 as she shoots for a sixth championship as preparation for the Olympic Games, where golf returns after a long hiatus.
Both Ko and Webb had positive comments regarding The Grange as the venue for this year’s tournament. Nineteen-year-old Minjee Lee, after being the top-placed amateur when the Open was played at Victoria Golf Club in 2014, hopes to continue the rapid progression from leading Australian to leading professional golfer.
