It seems as though professional boxing and the UFC are pulling out all the stops in the quest to descend to the level of professional wrestling.
What is even more perplexing is that if promoters do indeed succeed in bringing to fruition a circus act involving a match betwixt retired/not retired/retired again Conor McGregor and truly retired (unless the financial incentive is adequate) Floyd “Money” Mayweather, the possibility of a Donald Trump Presidency completely loses the title for ludicrousness.
Boxing trainer Freddie Roach reports he has been approached to train McGregor in the nuances of the Sweet Science, but he has steadfastly refused to contribute to the rumours of a meeting betwixt the two fighters.
Reality check: If McGregor were to step into the ring with Mayweather, he would survive only as long as Mayweather’s interest was alive. Mayweather could tweet whilst wearing boxing gloves and still dispose of McGregor in the first round, depriving all those fans willing to plop down their $99 pay-per-view fee of anything close to resembling a value, other than for the millions who enjoy nothing better than a bloody Irishman.
Mayweather and McGregor have each been engaging the other in a war of words waged via the media in a clash of egos that is far more entertaining than any potential meeting in the ring could ever hope to be.
