Chautauqua Horse Of The Month

Chautauqua - Horse Of The Month

Our BetsFree.com.au Horse of the Month is the mighty grey sprinter Chautauqua. After conquering the world’s best sprinters at the Sha Tin track in Hong Kong, who else could properly wear the mantle of Horse of the Month.

Chautauqua, ridden by Tommy Berry, came from the rear of the Chairman's Sprint field over 1200m to salute in a stirring win. Overcoming local hope Lucky Bubbles and outsider Strathmore, the grey flash was the favourite here in Australia with the corporate bookies. Chautauqua, now has 12 wins from 22 starts, with 5 of them being Group One wins.

Trainer Wayne Hawkes is now weighing up options for further international success and is quoted as saying, “Everything is on the table.” The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint in Los Angeles in November is one of those tasty options on the table. Chautauqua won a spot in the field for this fortuitous race through his win in the TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick last month.

This includes all fees paid and a sixty-thousand-dollar travel allowance. The Breeder's Cup Turf Sprint is over 1300m at the famous Santa Anita racetrack.

Hong Kong officials have invited Chautauqua back for their international race day at Sha Tin in December. A further option available is the Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama in Japan over 1200m. The prize money for this international feature race is one million eight hundred thousand dollars. Alternatively, Chautauqua could go for a long spell, if that was what was decided was in the best interest of the gelding and his future racing.

Chautauqua’s four-year-old season has delivered exceptional results for trainer and connections. Four of these wins included: the G1 TJ Smith Stakes, the G3 Bobbie Lewis, the G2 Gilgai Stakes and the G2 Rubiton Stakes. Jockey Tommy Berry was aboard for three of these four big wins. Chautauqua is now considered to be the best sprinter on the planet.

The grey flash has accrued over five and a half million dollars in prize money. His sire is Encosta de Lago and his dam Lovely Jubly.

According to the Internet, Chautauqua, the word, is from the North American Iroquois language and refers to a bag tied in the middle and/or two moccasins tied together. It is also a popular place name in the USA, mainly around New York, but also in Kansas.

It is also the name of a regional airline in Indianapolis, which is a better fit for the grey flash in terms of speed. I imagine his name relates to Chautauqua Lake in New York, as he is out of Encosta de Lago. Well, he definitely runs on top of the water, like a squall or storm flashing through.

BetsFree congratulates Chautauqua and his connections for being recognised as our BetsFree Horse of the Month; may there be many more to come.
