Damien Oliver Jockey Of The Month October 2015
Jockey Of The Month - Damien Oliver
People were so impressed with his story they made it into a feature film called The Cup in 2011, which charted his brother’s untimely death and Damien’s subsequent Melbourne Cup victory.
Riding Irish trainer Dermot Weld's Media Puzzle to victory under immense pressure he became the focus of the nation’s celebration of his riding ability and the man he is. Personally, I had my hard earned on Media Puzzle on that fateful day and the celebration was closer to home for me because of that.
Oliver has also been suspended from racing after being charged in 2012 for placing a $10K bet on a horse (not the one he was riding) in a race in which he was riding.
Not only is it illegal for jockeys to bet in any circumstances, it is doubly serious to back another nag in a race when you are riding something else. The inference being that you will not be giving your best on the unbacked horse you are riding.
Damien Oliver was eventually suspended, after an enquiry, for eight months; some in the racing industry were surprised by the leniency of the decision.
Currently, Damien Oliver has ridden fifty three winners from three hundred and twenty three starts; and he is coming fifth in the Victorian jockey's premiership. Oliver is an eight time winner of the Scobie Breasley Medal and has won the Victorian jockey’s premiership ten times.
He was inducted into the racing Hall of Fame in 2008. Winner of three Melbourne Cups, four Caulfield Cups and two Cox Plates, he is truly a racing superstar in the saddle.
Damien Oliver will be riding Ritchie’s Vibe in the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday; in that horses attempt to become the first horse to win that race twice since Black Caviar did it.
Richie’s Vibe won the 2014 Australia Stakes. BetsFree.com.au wishes Damien Oliver congratulations, as our Jockey of the Month, and every success for the rest of the racing season.
