David Pires Jockey Of The Month January 2016
Jockey Of The Month - David Pires
Our BetsFree jockey of the month is Tasmanian rider David Pires. This award went to David for his winning double in Hobart on Monday; including the $200 000 Hobart Cup on Up Cups over 2400m.
David Pires rode the Tasmanian bred and David Brunton trained stayer to an impressive victory. The race was graced with some top jockeys including Damien Oliver, and Michelle Payne who finished third on Beliveau.
Sigrid Carr rode Geegees Goldengirl, who finished second after setting the pace for much of the race. David Pires aboard Up Cups found a nice rails run and steered the gelding to victory. Race favourite Quick Strike, with Damien Oliver aboard, broke a cannon bone during the race and had to be put down shortly afterwards. Oliver suffered a twisted ankle and was lucky to escape further serious injury.
This was David Pires’s first Hobart Cup after a second in 2011 on Organised and a third on Banca Mo last year. Now thirty four years of age, Pires moved to Tasmania from Victoria fourteen years ago for more riding opportunities.
David Pires won the Tasmanian jockey’s premiership last year and is highly competitive every year. Pires has ridden twenty three winners so far this season and currently has an eleven point six percent strike rate. David Pires was successful aboard Isibaeva in the 2014 Bow Mistress Trophy, a Group 3 event; and on Hellova Street in the Listed Tassbet.Com Stakes in 2015. David Pires is considered to be one of Tasmania’s most highly regarded senior jockeys.
David Pires, our BetsFree jockey of the month is currently running fourth in the Tasmanian jockey premiership race. Brendon McCoull is currently leading with thirty one and a half winners, from Sigrid Carr in second place with twenty nine winners, and Raquel Clark in third spot with twenty seven and a half winners.
David Pires won this important award last year and looks to be mounting a concerted charge now, at the business end of the season. The Hobart Cup victory will give him added impetus to chase down those ahead of him on the ladder.
On Saturday the 14 February at the Hobart track David Pires will be riding Coin Toss for Michael Trinder in Race 1, Butano for Charlie Goggin in Race 2, A Matter Of Time for Jenny James in Race 3, and Bideford for Ian Hay in Race 7. BetsFree wishes David Pires every success in the future and lots more winning rides.
