Felicia Bergstrand Jockey Of The Month March 2017
Jockey Of The Month - Felicia Bergstrand
Were we lazy, or perhaps were we to cop to laziness and commence with, were we lazier, we would find it easy to make Winx our betsfree.com.au Horse of the Month every month, for the foreseeable future at least, but no such labour saving device tempts us when it comes to picking our bestsfree.com.au Jockey of the Month.
The field of jockeys is large, with many worthy contenders, one that can shift during the season, so we do not have to dig long to uncover our March Jockey of the Month, Darwin’s current leader, Felicia Bergstrand.
Venturing to Northern Territory for this month’s jockey might seem as though we are a bit far afield, but riders from the farther reaches of racing today are the potential stars of the metro circuits in years to come, and we are always on the prowl for something we can claim in years to come as our omniscient prediction from the past.
Here are the figures on Bergstrand as they stand at this moment.
She has made 100 starts for 19 wins, 18 seconds, 13 thirds and 23 jumps combined for finishes of fourth or fifth.
Of Northern Territory riders with 50 or more starts, her 19 percent strike rate trails only the Raymond Vigar. She trails Vigar by $106,000 in prize money, but by the same token, she has a gap of over $100,000 betwixt her and the current third-placed hoop, last year’s Darwin Jockey’s Premiership winner Brendon Davis.
Only Melanie Tyndall is within 10 races of Bergstrand’s workload.
Bergstrand, as is the case with many who choose to follow a dangerous vocation, had to deal with the adversity of having two of her fellow jockeys die just days apart when she was an apprentice.
Bergstrand was born in Sweden, making Northern Territory an unlikely landing spot, and she was late to the racing profession, serving as an apprentice to Darwin trainer Kerry Petrick in 2014. Her first ride came on Bundle of Dreams in 2012.
Her first win in March took place at Alice Springs. On March 18, she showed her metro track prowess with three wins at Darwin, followed by one more win at Darwin on March 25. Her most recent win was on Bedisguised at Alice Springs.
Now 30, she has brought in over $2.3 million in prizemoney and would seem to be coming into her prime years as a jockey.
Congratulations Felicia Bergstrand, may the stars of racing fortune continue to shine on you with constant or greater magnitude and good luck from us here at betsfree.com.au
