Jeff Lloyd Jockey Of The Month

Jockey Of The Month: May 2018 Jeff Lloyd

With apologies to South Australia, most of the major thoroughbred action in the month of May is focused on Queensland, so it felt logical to select a rider from the Sunshine State as the betsfree.com.au Jockey of the Month.

We have to cop to the fact that we were sorely tempted to pick Ruby Ride because of our admitted love of surnames that are both verbs and adjectives for what a person does as an occupation, but Ms. Ride currently holds the 20th position on the list for the Brisbane Jockeys Premiership.

Instead, we have picked Jeff Lloyd, because not one of the top riders in Queensland is having a season even remotely close to what Lloyd is producing.

Unless Lloyd is banned for the month of June and number two Robbie Fradd wins a race every day for the month, Lloyd has the Queensland Brisbane jockeys premiership in the bag.

He has ridden more, won more and at a higher percentage rate, and earned more than any other jockey for the year.

As this is being written, he is sitting on 139 wins for the season and will probably move ahead of that figure by the time we get to the end of this sentence. Our sources show that he has made over 400 starts in the 2017 – 2018 Australian Thoroughbred Racing season, with a win/place strike rate just under 25 percent and almost $5.4 million in prize money. In well over 500 starts, he has won or placed 50 percent of the time.

It was his body of work for the season that tipped the balance in his favour, rather than what he did in the month of May. His biggest win for the month would seem to be the Group 3 BRC Sprint on May 19, when he steered Tony Gollan’s I’m A Rippa home ahead of Privlaka and Mr. Sneaky.

He is booked to ride six races, three for Toby Edmonds at Ipswich Wednesday coming, so the figures we mentioned earlier will climb.

Lloyd has been plying his trade in Brisbane for a long time.

He won the Brisbane premiership in 2016, three years after suffering a stroke and it would have seemed as though the final chapter in his remarkable riding career that spanned four decades had been written.

In 2017, he passed Chris Munce for wins in a season when he won three races at Ipswich to surpass Munce’s achievements in the 2011 – 2012 season.

During his remarkable career, Lloyd has ridden some remarkable horses. Houtzen is one that immediately comes to mind.

Congratulations to the betsfree.com.au May 2018 Jockey of the Month, Mr. Jeffrey Lloyd.
