Supido Horse Of The Month

Supido - Horse Of The Month July 2017

It was far easier to pick a Jockey of the Month for July than it is to pick a Horse of the Month.

There is limited action in July, with nothing above Group 3 quality. We have recognised the big stars, such as Winx, Hartnell, Black Heart Bart, Chautauqua and others throughout the 2016 – 2017 Australian thoroughbred season, so with a quiet racing month coming to a close, we decided to make the most of our arbitrary discretion and declare that for July 2017, the Horse of the Month is Supido.

Supido - Horse Of The Month

Why Supido? You might ask.

He is the favourite going into the concluding Group race of the season, the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse. That is our primary reason. Next, he is being ridden by Beau Mertens, the apprentice sensation that was the talk of Victoria this season, as he looks to finish third in the Victoria jockey state premiership and second in the metro standings.

More importantly, though, Supido is a fine horse by any measure. The five-year-old entire has raced 13 times for seven wins and three placings. He is going into the Bletchingly Stakes as the top pick after his recent win in the Group 3 MRC Sir John Monash Stakes, so Supido obviously knows and likes the Caulfield track.

Supido’s other results this year include third place finishes in the Group 1 The Goodwood at Morphettville and the Group 2 ATC Challenge Stakes at Royal Randwick.

Supido is primarily of North American lines. His sire was the Aussie Sebring, winner of the STC Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes and the Group 1 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes and winner of over $2.5 million in just six starts.

Supido’s dam was Lady Succeed of Japan, winner of two races from eight starts.

Other Aussie horse in Supido’s line going back include Purespeed, Lady Moulin, Luskin Star and Willowy Five generations back are Kaoru Star and Far Vista.

It is when the North American lines are examined that you find some impressive ancestors. Nureyev, Danehill and Northern Dancer figure prominently in Supido’s breeding. There are other impressive ancestors as well, including Danzig, Mr. Prospector, Nearctic and Natalma.

Supido is perhaps not of the star stature of some of our previous Horses of the Month, but he has shown he belongs on the track with some of the stars, such as English and Black Heart Bart.

Congratulations to Supido and good luck in the Bletchingly Stakes to the Horse of the Month.
