Terravista | Horse Of The Month February 2017
Terravista - Horse Of The Month
Our February horse of the month is not what you would consider a household name, unless you lived in the household of Mr. Joseph Pride, the Warwick Farm based trainer that handles the preparation work for a seven-year-old gelding by the name of Terravista.
By Captain Rio of Great Britain from New Zealand’s Parfore, Terravista was born on 5 November 2009. Bred by M. Ryan of New South Wales, Terravista’s blood lines are almost exclusively of norther hemisphere origins, save for his dam, Parfore, who hails from New Zealand and some Australian connections one generation further back on his dam’s side in Gold Brose and Classy Twiggy. Famous ancestors include Nureyev of the U.S. and Northern Dancer and Nijinsky from Canada.
Terravista has been running since early 2013 and after finishing third in two trials, won his first official race in March of 2013 at Warwick Farm.
His first win at the Group level came in February of 2014 when he took the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes, a 1200-metre quality handicap at Randwick. He had jumped at $2.50, so it was already apparent that those in the know were aware of his abilities.
Less than a month later, he backed that with a win in the Group 3 Liverpool, where he bested El Roca and Ninth Legion over 1300 metres of soft Warwick Farm turf.
He once again proved his mettle as a mudder in August of 2014, when he carried Hugh Bowman to the post in the Group 3 Showcounty, beating In Cahoots and Bull Point.
His connections moved him up in quality, and he immediately rewarded them with a Group 2 win in The Shorts, an 1100-metre affair for 3YOs at set weights plus penalty, at Randwick in September of 2014.
In February of 2015, he won his first Group 1, the Darley Classic at Flemington, beating Chautauqua in the process. He paid his backers handsomely in that race.
He continues to produce in 2017, winning the Group 1 Black Caviar Stakes at Flemington, showing that he could handle weight-for-age conditions and claim one of the Global Sprint Challenge Races.
That most recent win is the basis for our selection of Terravista for the Horse of the Month for February of 2017, combined with his overall record of 11 wins, three seconds and three thirds in 25 races. In that span from 2013 until just now, he has taken in almost $2.5 million in prize money.
Congratulations to Terravista and good fortune during the rest of his career.
