The Quarterback | Horse Of The Month March 2016
The Quarterback - Horse of the Month
As this horse, delivered, top ten trainer, Robbie Griffiths his very first Group One win in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington last Saturday.
In a race most thought the superstar sprinter Chautauqua would win, The Quarterback, with jockey Craig Newitt aboard, stole the day. Getting home in front of the Western Australian sprinter Black Heart Bart, with Chautauqua running third,
The Quarterback was an extremely popular winner on the day. Picking up $750 000 for the win takes his winnings to $1,283,250.
The Quarterback is a six year old chestnut gelding; sired by Street Boss out of Soorena. Trained by Robbie Griffiths who is based at Cranbourne, and owned by a group of owners including Craig Pearce.
The Quarterback has a record of 8 wins and 7 places from 24 starts; giving him a 33.33% win ratio and a 62.5% place ratio.. He cost just $120 000 to buy as a yearling and was bred by Rick Jamieson’s Gilgai Farm. Previously The Quarterback was the winner of two Listed races; which included the Kensington Stakes on Oaks Day.
Robbie Griffiths has trained over five hundred and sixty winners from some forty eight hundred starts and that this was his first Group One winner was a surprise.
Claiming that the stable had just been unlucky on the big occasions he was more than happy to put that anomaly to bed, once and for all. February this year has seen Robbie Griffiths train 13 winners and 16 place getters from 91 starting horses. March is looking like a much better month with this big race win, and a good crop of horses competing at races around the place.
BetsFree congratulates The Quarterback as our Horse of the Month in March and hats off to his trainer Robbie Griffiths. The Newmarket Handicap is no mean feat to win, as it always attracts the best sprinters in the land.
The Quarterback is now firmly up there in top company, as one of the premier sprinters in the country.
So, what is next for The Quarterback and trainer Robbie Griffiths? The horse is nominated for the Darley TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick on the 2nd of April 2016. Can The Quarterback maintain his new sprinting supremacy? Only time will tell; but for now it is time for horse and trainer to enjoy the chocolates and smell the roses.
