Wenona Girl Inducted In To Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2008

Wenona girl was one of the finest race horses ever to hit the Australian horse racing scene, culminating in her induction to the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Foaled in 1957 and trained by Maurice McCartin, Wenona girl was a mare who drew admiration from many quarters during her illustrious career, which comprised of 27 wins in total, 22 of which were principal races and 15 of which have since been upgraded to Group 1 status.

The G1 races that Wenona Girl won under the ownership of William Longworth include 1000 Guineas, VRC Sires Produce Stakes, Rawson Stakes, George Adams Handicap, George Main Stakes, Rosehill Stakes, All Aged Stakes, AJC Adrian Oaks Stakes and VATC Futurity Stakes.

At just two years of age, ‘The Girl”, as she was affectionately called, won her first start at the 1959 AJC Gimcrack Stakes and she went on to win a total of 6 races from 8 starts, coming second in 2 races.

Among her wins were the VRC Sires Produce Stakes and AJC Sires Produce Stakes. Of notable mention is also the rivalry between her and the famous Sky High.

Wenona Girl 3YO

At the age of 3, Wenona Girl was a winner in 7 races, came second in 2 and finished third once from a total of 15 starts in principal races. Among her wins were Hobartville Stakes, Rosehill Guineas (in which she beat the legendary Sky High and Persian Lyric).

She also raced in Melbourne, the Wakeful Stakes, which she took from Glimpse. She also won 1,000 Guineas. Later on in 1961, Wenona Girl won the AJC Adrian Knox Oaks Stakes as well as Ranvet Stakes, which she won from Key and Persian Puzzle.

One year later, Wenona Girl won 2 races, came second thrice and finishing third once in the principle races she ran. Her wins included Tatts Tramway Handicap and CF Orr Stakes.

She was runners up to Sky High in the Canterbury Stakes and came second twice more in the Oakleigh Plate and on her return to Sydney. She took third position in the All Aged Stakes.

1963 Wins 6 Big Races

1963 was a memorable year for Wenona Girl as she went on to win six major races in succession. These were the George Main Stakes, Gloaming Stakes, Futurity Stakes, George Adams Stakes, Linlithgrow Stakes and the Lightning Stakes.

Wenona Girl was still active at the age of six, winning the George Main Stakes and STC Race Stakes once more and the All Aged Stakes in Sydney as well as the VRC Linlithgrow Stakes, VRC George Adams Stakes and VRC Lightning Stakes in Melbourne.

Moreover, she came second in Liston Stakes and Warwick Stakes and third in Canterbury Stakes.
The much talked about rivalry between Wenona Girl and Sky High was a scintillating affair but Sky High had an upper hand in the 20 races they participated in together. Sky High took honours in 6 occasions while Wenona Girl was a winner in five.

However, Sky High also takes pride in having won the Golden Slipper.
