Winx | Horse Of The Month February 2016
Winx - Horse Of The Month
My editor, when commissioning me to write this story, mistakenly wrote ‘Minx’ instead of Winx and in some ways that typo may be closer to the truth; like some Freudian slip or something.
The mighty mare Winx is a bit of a minx, the way she tears past bigger horses again and again. Whether it be her incredible four lengths rails run win in the 2015 Cox Plate or her most recent return win in the Apollo Stakes over 1400m last weekend, she leaves bigger horses in her wake. Winx is the BetsFree Horse of the Month because her Apollo Stakes win is her 6th in a row; and 10th career victory from just 16 starts.
Hugh Bowman her regular rider, and Cox Plate winning jockey aboard her, was once again in the saddle last week. He piloted the super mare into fifth from the inside rails gate at the start and Solicit led them all at genuine tempo and looked a likely winner until the last 100m, when Winx burst through finding that extra gear she has.
Solicit finished second with Hauraki third a further couple of lengths behind. It is the acceleration of the little mare that captures my attention; the way she seems to effortlessly leave them all far behind.
Her trainer Chris Waller has the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes over 1600m at Randwick in a couple of week’s time as Winx’s next target.
After the win Waller said, “She’s not a big, masculine, gross horse so she’ll tighten-up a little bit more.” So, the power packed little mare will be even fitter for her next challenge.
Jockey Hugh Bowman shared that he was aware of the buzz that Winx stimulates amongst the race crowd, as lots of people lined the fence at Rosehill taking her photo as she made her way to the starting gates for the Apollo Stakes.
He was, also, concerned that he may have left his run a tad too late, but the super mare responded and didn’t let him down. Bowman sees the longer races ahead more suitable for Winx and is excited and privileged to be riding her.
The BetsFree Horse of the Month, Winx, is a genuine super star in the making, if she is not already. We predict a rich autumn of racing and many more wins. Go Winx, go Waller and go Bowman. The Chipping Norton Stakes are next on their agenda.
